How do you want to be remembered when you drop dead?

Someone died today. A poet I am a fan of. He died this evening because of heart attacks induced by Coronavirus. He was 70. A famed man, who traveled all over the world reading poetry and inspiring hundreds and thousands of people who listened to him. He wrote in Urdu. His name is Rahat Indori.

I cried a bit. I don’t know if I cried for him, or I cried for the fickleness of life. I could be dead tonight. Someone I love could be dead anytime. Like life is fickle, death is fickle too. Rahat Indori is immortal and will always be immortal. His poetry will never him die.

Have you ever thought about your life? Imagine you drop dead tomorrow, what will people remember about you?

I think it is an important question to consider when you are thinking about your life’s work. What would you stand for? What is the message you will leave for the world? What will people remember about your life as a whole?

If you look at life as a whole, there are a bunch of days and we are doing something or the other all those days. Is there an underlying purpose behind why you do what you do?

I am 39. I think a lot about these questions. What is the underlying reason why I do what I do? I have also have a written purpose and I consider that purpose every now and then: To make the world an inspired and happier place. That’s my purpose. I have considered it multiple times to understand if this makes sense every day, and every moment of my life.

Why did I start this blog?

To make the world an inspired and happier place.

Why have I written the books I have written?

To make the world an inspired and happier place.

Why did I quit my comfortable job a few years back to leap into uncertainty?

To make the world an inspired and happier place.

Why do I do comedy?

To make the world a happier place (I mean, I haven’t yet figured a way to inspire people with my comedy and have a long way to go in my comedy career).

I have literally put my entire life at risk to make the world an inspired and happier place. That’s why I do what I do and I hope I will be able to succeed at scale at some point and inspire others to find their purpose.

Rudyard Kipling did a lot of work in his life, and if there is one piece of work he is really known for, it’s the poem ‘If’ by Rudyard Kipling.

What will you be remembered for?

I see a lot of people live lives which are limited to their families. That’s great, if that’s your idea of what your life is about. My father lived all his life to raise me and my sister, built a house and didn’t take any untoward risks, unlike I have. I do not know where I will land with the risks I have taken with my life, but I hope I will be able to inspire some people in the world to follow their dreams and that does mean a lot to me.

Now, you need to decide what matters to you and what are you willing to do in order to make that happen. After all, you must feel happy about the life you have lived.

If you don’t feel happy, what’s the point?

I think entrepreneurs are an amazing set of people. If there is one community that truly changes the world in a significant way, it’s the community of entrepreneurs.

Jeff Bezos created Amazon and changed the world. When he is dead, that’s what he will be remembered for. He has made our lives easier and simpler, while making himself the richest man on the planet.

Elon Musk is one of the most successful entrepreneurs in the world. He created PayPal in the beginning of this century with Peter Thiel. He has created Tesla and SpaceX. He has also helped found other companies and is one of the most inspiring men alive in the world. He will be remembered for a sustained impact on the world, even after he is gone.

If we are to think about the kind of impact you and I are going to have on the world, we need to understand what are we about and what problems do we want to solve in the world. We will be remembered for how we made the world around a better place while we lived.

That’s what I want you to think about. I want your life to matter and that’s why I am writing this piece post midnight, because I think even if it ends up inspiring one person to do something significant with their life, my time here would have meant something.

Thank you for reading.
