Become a deep thinker by building depth in personality

People who have depth are deep thinkers. Let us attempt to understand how you too can become a deep thinker.

Why are we talking about depth on a blog on human happiness?

I considered this question as I started writing this post. The answer wasn’t quite far. The kind of happiness we evangelize here is deep and meaningful. That kind of happiness is not possible without depth in personality and in character.

So, in this post, we are going to try and do something quite difficult- understand what depth means and how to become a deep thinker, if that’s possible.

What is depth?

The dictionary has multiple definitions of depth. However, the one we like is emotional profundity.

What does it mean to be profound?

Again, we go back to the dictionary- penetrating or entering deeply into subjects of thought or knowledge; having deep insight or understanding

So, the state of depth is the ability to be able to enter deeply into subjects and stop operating at a superficial level.

How does one acquire depth or profundity?

This is a difficult question. Is it possible?

The fact that you are reading this post or you have read more than one post on this blog, is proof to me that you have depth and you like to go beneath the surface of things. That’s the kind of blog I am building. People who operate at a surface level will not be able to read even one post thoroughly. However, people who have depth would want to read a few. That is what I would like to believe.

Now, let us get back to the question: How does one become a deep thinker?

I would want to live in a world where you can go deep into conversations and explore emotions beyond what people say on the surface. Life exists in the depths of our soul and no matter how superficial a person may seem, they have a core which they may not have accessed themselves.

The idea is to reach out for depth. It is possible to seek and find depth if one makes the effort.

It is not easy. Most people do not seek depth. The moment you ask them a few deep questions about their life, they dither and avoid conversation. Worse, they can’t understand those questions, and move on with their lives ignoring the fact that they are operating at a shallow space.

If you don’t understand yourself deeply, how would you experience deep joy?

It is not possible.

How does one access depth within themselves. We would recommend a few things to do.

1. Question everything to become a deep thinker

Do not take anything you are told at face value. Question everything. When people tell you that you need to believe in God, question why. Question if God exists and fi that has been proven. Think through important questions and form your own opinions.

Any person who has depth in personality has an ability to think on his/her own and state why they believe in what they believe in. They are able to tell you where they stand and why they stand there. Question everything to build depth.

2. Read great books to become a deep thinker

Thankfully, we live in times where some of the greatest life stories are available to us to read. I am currently reading the biography of Elon Musk, who arguably is one of the greatest in men ever lived. I will follow it up with the biography of Steve Jobs, for similar reasons.

Read lives of people who have had great depth. Learn from them and you will slowly start thinking like them. Even if you don’t get to their level, you will improve in thinking and cognition.

3. Meditate to become a deep thinker

Mediate. Sit down in a comfortable position and observe your thoughts. Spending time doing meditation is relaxing and powerful. You get to understand the kind of thoughts that go through your mind and you become of them.

We believe it is a great way to build them in personality since you get to understand yourself and the world around you a little bit more.

4. Thinking purposefully

Thinking is an activity just like anything else. Make time to think and reflect on your life. Make plans. Look at the plans that you made earlier and observe where you succeeded and where you failed.

Life is a constant calibration process. Knowing what works for you and what doesn’t is a sign of depth that most people lack. They don’t know why things happen to them in a particular way and what their lives are about.

If you want to build depth, you should know.

5. Emptiness creates deep minds

Allow yourself a state of emptiness sometimes. Learn to be by yourself without any technology. Sit quietly and enjoy the silence. I think we live in a hi-tech culture which has killed people’s ability to enjoy silence. The moment they are by themselves, they pick up the mobile phone and start acting busy while they are doing nothing but scrolling their social media feed.

Allow yourself to be empty.

6. Write

Writing is one of the best ways to understand life. When you write, you understand what you are writing about. It is a process of thinking and understanding life. No matter what you do professionally, it helps to keep some sort of a journal or a blog where you can write how you feel.

The more you write, the better you get at it. The more you will find that you are more connected with yourself.

7. Ask why more often

The source of depth lies in the answer to the question why. They say that once you figure out your why, you can find out how. May be that’s quite true. You should ask yourself a bunch of why questions, for example, the below:

Why do I do what I do?

Or, why do people believe in this?

Why should I believe in it?

You can make your own lists of questions. You will find that answering these questions is difficult and in the process, you grow as a person.

8. Solitude

I can’t overemphasize the importance of a few moments of solitude in everyday life. The more time you spend with yourself and ask yourself about what things mean to you, you will grow in depth and character.

Make time for solitude, no matter how busy your days are.

9. Spend time with people who have depth

They say that you are an average of the people you spend time with. Besides the mathematics of this quote, the point is that you become like people you spend time with, because they influence you. Spend time with people who are better than you. You don’t need company for the sake of company. Find people with depth, and latch on to them.

10. Create a purposeful life

Create a life of purpose. That is one sure shot way to have depth and meaning in your days. When your life has a purpose, your days are full of character. You immerse in life, and not just live at a shallow level, like majority of the human race.

Find your purpose or create it.

Wow, this one was a difficult one to write. I have always admired people with depth and continue to. However, I wasn’t sure how to create depth, if one purposefully went after it and there are not a lot of articles on the internet that help.

I hope this helps you find depth, meaning and joy in your everyday life.
