Are entrepreneurs and businessmen happy?

It is an interesting idea to try to understand if entrepreneurs and businessmen are happier than the rest of the society which holds jobs. Of all the things that I have observed professionally during the course of my career, I have come to admire entrepreneurs tremendously. Especially entrepreneurs who pursue an unsolved or under solved problem, solve it and thereby making the world a happier places since they end up choosing problems which affect a large number of people.

However, all business is not good business and all businesses do not really make the world a happier place. A few businesses make the world a rather painful place. We will see as we go through this post.

Let’s consider some of the biggest businesses of the world, and see as we go.

Amazon, started by Jeff Bezos, is one of the biggest companies of the world and Jeff is the richest man on the planet. There is a lot one can say against capitalism but what’s true is that before Amazon started delivering things our homes, it was quite a tedious process to shop offline at all times. Now that we are used to it, it seems like second skin, but Amazon made it happen. They were the first to do it. They created a culture over 2 decades which has made e-commerce an everyday parlance. Even in the pandemic, you and I can shop stuff and get it delivered to our homes. Amazon does make the world a happier place.

Let’s look at Coca-Cola. It is one of the biggest businesses of the world and employs hundreds of thousands of people. You could argue that it is not a healthy drink and is full of sugar, which is true. I personally feel that aerated drinks are harmful for health and should be avoided. However, Coke believes that they are in the business of helping people ‘open happiness.’

Let’s look at Facebook. Before Mark Zuckerberg started the company, there were smaller social networks but nobody had built something at the scale he did. You could argue for or against it, but Facebook, in many ways has made the world a smaller, more connected place.

Similarly, LinkedIn, started by Reid Hoffman has allowed people to create professional profiles and thereby made it easier for professionals and companies to connect.

Entrepreneurs make the world better

One cannot avoid talking about the likes of Apple, Microsoft or Tesla when talking about entrepreneurship. Entrepreneurs like Steve Jobs, Bill Gates and Elon Musk have changed the world forever. Unfortunately, we lost Steve Jobs way too early. Elon Musk’s companies continue to make the world a better place and he is one of the most inspiring leaders of the 21st century. I and millions of people around the world look at him for inspiration.

Larry Page and Sergey Brin started Google and changed the world forever. The human history will look at the world prior to and post Google since kids born in a post Google world are way more informed than those who were born before Google has been founded.

All entrepreneurs and businessmen, however, are not good. I have my limitations on companies selling tobacco. They make the world an unhappier place by selling a product which gives people a high and in the process deteriorates their health for making a profit. It is bad business, product and vicious marketing.

More often than not, however, as we have seen, business is a force for happiness. It should be a force to make the world a better place.

What is the job of entrepreneurs and businessmen?

An entrepreneur’s job, from what I have understood about it, is to find a problem he cares deeply about, which affects millions of people and solve the problem for them, thereby creating a business and making a profit.

Thankfully, now in 2020, after two decades of innovation in the start-up world, we have a vibrant start-up ecosystem and start-ups continue to grow. In India and worldwide, entrepreneurs continue to think of, and implement new business ideas and thanks to the internet, ideas which are truly innovative and make the world a happier place, gain traction.

Why should you consider entrepreneurship?

As a writer and someone who thinks a lot about entrepreneurship, I would encourage you to think about entrepreneurship as a means to make the world a better and happier place. You are the best version of yourself when you are a part of entrepreneurs and businessmen community.

Like we have learned about happiness, it is only by making others happier, that we can find happiness for ourselves.
