How to act your age-f***** DON’T!

Don’t act your age. I needed the cuss word in the title to remind myself that I am not acting my age. I do not want to feel old; and I do everything within my power to not act my age. By the way, I am 43 at the time of writing this.

The problem with acting your age

Everyone tells you to act your age. I mean everyone in the society, at least most people. Basically, fuck society. Society is a bunch of miserable people who want to keep growing their herd. You don’t want to be one of them. This article is going to be everything about age, including the impact on the quality of our lives basis what we think about age.

But you ask, “what’s wrong with acting your age, bro?”

Everything I say here, will be from the perspective of the majority’s view on age. Majority of people look at excuses to not work hard on themselves, celebrate the meaningless body shaming revolution (so-called) where lazy people assume the reasons to sick people to justify their laziness, among other meaningless excuses.

The problem with acting your age mafia is that they want you to be a part of their misery. They believe that you should stop having fun after a certain age, because they have stopped having any fun a long time ago. So, they despise you if they see you having fun, and tell you to act your age.

To hell with acting your age.

15 reasons why acting your age is destroying your life, and you should immediately start NOT acting your age:

1. Age means what you believe it to be

age is what you believe it to be.

I wrote a piece about belief’s earlier, sometime last month. Our lives become what we believe to be true.  If you believe at age 15, you can’t do something, you won’t do it.

Considering you believe you are too old at 40 to reinvent your life, you will not do anything to reinvent your life.

If you believe age means nothing and you can reinvent yourself at any age, you will behave accordingly, and that would reflect in your reality

2. If you act your age, you will feel old pretty soon

Here is the point- the society’s definitions of age are meaningless. Most people start saying that they feel old when they complete their 20’s. Now, that’s utter bullshit. If 20’s is youth only, then do we spend most of our lives as old people?

If you render age meaningless, which it is, you have the ability to feel young as long as you can keep yourself physically and mentally active.

3. The oldest bodybuilder in the world

Jim Arrington is bodybuilding beyond 90 years of age. Most people don’t even live till 90, and this man is not done doing something he finds meaningful. I hope he lives several more years and continues to inspire people to ignore their age, and do what they want to do with their lives. This point end here

4. Many people need smoking and alcohol to act their age

In high societies, when people meet socially, they ask each other, “what’s your poison,” which basically means the choice of the alcoholic drink- beer, scotch or vodka, or whatever it is. The consumption of alcohol is significantly increasing in my part of the world, because people don’t know how else to enjoy themselves, besides getting drunk, losing their senses, and then having some fun, which they can’t have while they are sober.

Similarly, people smoke to fill the void in their lives. They justify it with reasons like the below:

  • Oh, it relaxes me
  • It feels good with tea/coffee/coke/alcohol
  • It allows me to think
  • It makes me think better

The truth is, which everyone knows is that both alcohol and smoking are extremely harmful to our health, for both men and women. But then, if you need to act your age, you need both alcohol and smoking.

5. The never-ending nostalgia-don’t act your age

Nostalgia is unhealthy.

People who live in the present and the future talk of possibilities for the future and what they are working on right now. People who act their age talk of the old times (all the time) because they feel old and done with life. Their attitude forces them to not have any plans for the future. So, they find a sorry group, where people are always talking about how things were back then. Don’t join the gang.

As long you are alive, you have a life going. Keep finding ways to contribute to the world.

6. If you act your age, you will die soon

Don’t follow the act your age brigade, or you won’t live long. If you don’t want to, then it’s fine. However, if you do want to live long, you need to stop acting your age, and completely disregard it, and take complete care of your health.

7. If you act your age, you will not stay physically and mentally active

You will not work on your body or on your mind and would want your life to be over, because most people don’t stay physically and mentally healthy.

To stay physically healthy, you need to move physically by either going to the gym or running or swimming or whatever else you enjoy.

To stay mentally healthy, you continue to work, or read, or solve problems.

When we rest beyond what’s needed, we rust.

8. You won’t care about how you look if you act your age

There are 2 kinds of people- those who care about looking active and ready to shoot, and those who would throw in the towel anytime and give up.

You see, giving up is so easy, and all of us would give up, if the spirit didn’t fight back.

Take care of how you look. Look presentable, and feel young inside. The old isn’t quite in the grey hair strands; it is inside the heart.

9. You won’t try new goals or even new experiences

The history is full of people who started businesses quite late in their lives, who became artists late in their lives and more. If you act your age, you will not try out new things. You will let your goals stay unaccomplished and won’t go after them.

You will die inside, before you die actually.

10. Maturity is another name for seriousness and boredom

I get it- all this maturity business. Yes, kids are not mature. Of course, because they haven’t seen life, and haven’t been hurt by it.

We need to be mature as people, just like an insurance policy, which matures by a certain period. But when we do mature really? Life is not an insurance policy.

Unfortunately, though, people associate maturity with sternness and seriousness.

Do mature people laugh, or it’s immature to laugh?

What’s wrong with being childish at times if it makes you happy?

Stop being so mature all the time, and have some fun.

11. Stop acting your age- be a little mad some of the time

be mad and have fun to not act your age.

How often do you dance? If you don’t, you should dance a bit. It’s one of the most enjoyable activities you can do at any point of your life. When you dance, smile, and be happy that you have an opportunity to dance. Do you remember when did you dance like mad- you probably don’t because you were busy acting your age.

How often do you laugh out aloud- when was the last time you heard yourself laugh out aloud? Some of you probably haven’t in a long time, because you are busy acting your age.

Don’t act your age.

12. You may marry someone because you are getting too old, if you act your age

The rise of divorces.

A lot of people marry because they are getting a certain age, and not because they have found the right partner. As it would be, such marriages result in divorces and destroy a lot of lives which could have been joyous and beautiful.

Marry when you find the right partner, not because you are a certain age.

Don’t act your age.

13. If you act your age, you are using the wrong KPI for measuring your life

happiness is the only KPI that matters.

Age is a terrible KPI for measuring when you should do something. Yeah, biologically, women should have kids by a certain age, or it becomes really difficult later. There is an entire IVF industry in place, because people are choosing to have kids later, and they can’t conceive through regular sexual intercourse.

The other thing you may find hard to do is extreme physical activity pretty late in your life. For example, if you say, you will the Mount Everest at 80. Wait, a Japanese man has actually done that- climbed the Mount Everest at 80, this year. So, I prove myself wrong.

The point I am trying to make is that besides having babies, which is a biological necessity by a certain age, most things can be achieved at any age. We have mentioned a 90-year-old bodybuilder and 80-year-old mountain climber in this post, and I am sure you can find more examples of people who have done amazing things at ages, which would be considered too old by the masses.

14. If it feels right to do it, do it, to fuck with age

As this blog insists, the right KPI to measure life is happiness. You are supposed to do things because they make you happy, not because you are a certain age.

A lot of us figure out who we are, pretty late in our lives. In my case, it was in my 30’s and I have been trying to live a self-aware life ever since. There are things which I still can’t do, like take excessive risks with my career, but I try to do things that I think would make me happy, irrespective of my age.

I urge you to not stop yourself from doing things just because you are a certain age.

15. If you act your age, you are missing out on so much joy

Have fun. To hell with age.

This is my final point. If you let age to be a barrier, which most people do, you are missing out on so much life and joy you could experience. The world has changed significantly in the last few years. The previous generation didn’t focus much on the happiness element of life, or see that as a goal.

They did things because everybody did the same things. You want to be happy, and all of us realize who we are, and what makes us happy at varied moments in our lives.

If you realize it early, it’s amazing because you have time on your side and it is the greatest gift.

If you realize it late, figure out how to create a way so that you don’t give up on your happiness, just because you are X years old.  Please find a way, the world needs inspiration so that anyone can have a shot at their dreams regardless of their age.

In Conclusion

What we believe to be true, becomes our reality. The same thing goes with age. Don’t let age become a barrier to who and what you want to be. Be a little mad, no matter how old you are, and don’t forget to have fun. Life goes by, too fast.

Don’t act your age.
